Abstract
Notwithstanding growing concerns about household debts or ¡®the house poor¡¯, there is still only a small number of studies on the house poor in Korea who have excessive debts due to their homeownership. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of housing debt on their life satisfaction using the representative data. In this paper, the house poor, in particular, defined based on ¡®DTI (Debt To Income)¡¯ ratio. We closely examined both family relationships and life satisfaction in married couples with excessive debts due to housing. This study used data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS) to examine the effect of housing debton life satisfaction in married couples. We found that people with excessive housing debts were statistically less satisfied with their family relationships and overall life. However, excessive housing debt did not have a negative impact on the satisfaction with a spouse who generally takes part the housing purchase decision. It is meaningful because the negative effect of housing debts on life satisfaction has been proved through the reliable data. Furthermore, this research is expected to be one of the highly effective references for the solution of controversial housing or the real estate issues in Korea.
